Phoenix, Arizona - History

Real estate agents in Phoenix AZ informed us that the Hohokam tribe was the first known settlers of the Phoenix area. The resourceful tribe constructed an extensive irrigation system that covered over 135 miles to make the arid Salt River Valley suitable for living. Some of the channels created by the tribe are still in use today. The Hohokams suddenly disappeared from the area around 1450 A.D, but historians don’t have a clear answer as to why they did so. They assume it was because of the long period of drought in the area.

The United States gained control of the Phoenix area from the Mexicans in 1848 at the end of the Mexican-American War. John W. Swilling founded Phoenix in 1868. He saw that the place was suitable for farming, but the only missing piece was water. Swilling and his party solved the water problem by building canals that followed the Hohokam watercourse. The original population of Phoenix was only 250 people, but it grew to 2,500, and in 1881 it was incorporated as a city.

Arizona became a state on February 14, 1912, and Phoenix was named the capital. Significant technological advances influenced the growth of the city. Theodore Roosevelt began construction on the Theodore Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River in 1906. At the time of its building, it was the largest masonry dam in the world.

In 1920, Phoenix was growing, and its population doubled to 30,000. The economy flourished at that time, and was primarily based on agriculture. With the help of the Theodore Roosevelt Dam they grew cotton, citrus and cattle.

Real estate agents in Phoenix AZ inform us that the end of World War II brought significant changes to the area. The population continued to grow, and the economy shifted from being a purely agricultural city into an industrial one.

Also, during this time, air-conditioning became affordable for homeowners. With temperatures of over 100 degrees during summertime, now Phoenix was pleasant to live in all year round.
