In rem
Against the thing. A legal term describing proceedings against property in contrast to a proceeding against individual parties. For example, because John has lost his job, he defaulted on his home mortgage payments. Therefore, that bank providing the mortgage began a court action seeking a foreclosure in rem against the John home.
