Holiday Home Decor Ideas for This Fall and Winter

Whether you live in sunny California, cold North Dakota, busy New York City, or sweet down home Alabama, the holidays are the perfect opportunity for some new home decorations.

With fall in full swing, it’s definitely the season of “pumpkin everything”.  Adding some fall décor to the home you are staging can make it even more appealing to home buyers who can imagine themselves setting the stage for family gatherings, dinners with friends, parties, and more. Here are ten tips you can use to make your home fall ready, and just a few small tweaks can carry you from Thanksgiving into Christmas with minimal effort.

Color Scheme

Start with red, and work out from there. For Thanksgiving, add deep russet and rich oranges and flaming yellows with lighter greens and golds. White is a good base color, and once Thanksgiving is over you can strip back down to red, white, and green and add some darker greens and silver for a seamless transition.

Foliage and Flowers

Real, living ivy plants are great for year round décor, and you can add wreaths made of natural or faux woodland materials in the appropriate colors. Floral arrangements can be heavy with fall colors for Thanksgiving and then deepen into richer royal colors for Christmas – remember, purples and blues are great for winter as well.

Table Settings

Again, start with a white base, and extrapolate up into rich fall hues for your Thanksgiving dinner. Once that’s over, pull out the stops and use red and green accents with silver. Rustic wood napkin holders for the first holiday, and metal or ceramic ones for the second. Let your imagination run wild.

Mantle Décor

Plenty of leafy greenery on the mantle can be accented with orange pumpkins and multicolored corn for fall, and then replaced with red berries, pine cones, and a dusting of artificial snow for winter.

Be Unique

One family went to a real estate in Texas and enjoyed a unique take on the Christmas tree – a tumbling tumbleweed was set up on a large table, decorated like you would a tree, and the gifts arranged in piles around it and under the table. A Florida family skipped the colder themes and went for a sunny beach idea using coastal colors to create their own special Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Whatever you choose as your theme, have some fun with it and enjoy yourself. Having a house showing with an appropriate style décor for the season can make it seem even more attractive to potential home buyers. Don’t forget to bake some bread or pumpkin spice muffins, and hang some mistletoe just in case. A little cinnamon in a pot of apple cider on the stove will make the whole house smell fantastic, and you can really play up the holiday spirit.
