Houseplants can turn a boring living area into a fresh, inviting space. It is important for your real estate property to feel inviting, when your property is being shown by a real estate agent. Knowing which houseplants are easy to grow and maintain makes it simpler to decide on an indoor décor that includes plenty of greenery.

Trees

Trees that grow well indoors usually prefer bright but indirect sunlight and a schedule that allows the soil to dry out between watering. Fichus are the best known, however, check out these other easy to care for indoor trees:

  • Fiddle Leaf Figs are easy to grow, gain height quickly, and are perfect for spaces with lots of light and high ceilings.
  • Rubber trees can grow up to 8 feet tall given the headroom, or carefully pruned as they grow to create a shorter shrub. Large glossy leaves in deep green have an attractive shine.
  • Dwarf Fiji palms have an exotic look, but remain ridiculously easy to care for. They do well in even shady spots, and are short enough to fit on a piece of furniture.

Foliage Plants

While some of these plants are capable of flowering, most are used for their lush foliage. They create a friendly, inviting space, and generally grow well in any lighting condition.

  • Snake plants are often called the most tolerant of houseplants. They only require watering once a week or so, and have many different color combinations and stripe patterns.
  • Dieffenbachia plants have large leaves up to a foot long, which are yellow in the center and have a dark green edge. They can grow up to ceiling height and prefer evenly moist soil.

Succulents and Cacti

Lots of sunlight and an infrequent watering schedule make these desert plants ideal for those who have busy schedules or a habit of forgetfulness.

  • Tiny cacti do wonderfully on a desk, in a windowsill, or as a statement on and end table or breakfast bar. They come in almost every color of the rainbow and add character to any room.
  • Aloe Vera plants are traditional for kitchens; the leaves can be broken off and the sap used as a quick remedy for mild burns.

Hanging Baskets

Trailing or climbing plants propagate readily. Plant them in hanging baskets to encourage fast growth, and be prepared to take cuttings to expand your houseplant collection or share with friends and neighbors.

  • English Ivy is famously easy to grow, and astonishingly easy to care for. You can train it to grow along walls or ceilings with strategically placed nails and string.
  • Spider plants are quirky and fun to look at as well as to grow. They like bright lighting and evenly moist soil.

Any of these plants will make a good starting point if you aren’t sure whether or not your thumb is green or brown. They are also excellent choices when staging a home for sale, adding something special that will enrapture buyers.
