Does Living Near a Cemetery Affect Home Value?

Some home buyers may be faced with the decision of buying a home near a graveyard site. Depending on the owner, this may not be a personal issue. However, some buyers may wonder how this will affect the value of the home in the future. In reality, the appeal and value of a home doesn’t automatically change if it happens to also be near a graveyard, but it can in the future. Here’s why:

In larger cities, some home buyers feel that living near a cemetery brings a sense of calmness in an otherwise busy neighborhood or city. Since living in the city tends to be noisier, many home buyers may enjoy proximity to a cemetery for the calmness it offers. Living next to a cemetery guarantees quiet neighbors and no noise complaints. Many people also consider a cemetery as a conveniently quiet place to jog or take a walk.

Living near a cemetery may have an adverse affect on the home selling process in the future. Although living near a cemetery doesn’t automatically affect the home’s price, it does have the potential to drive down home prices. This is largely based on people’s personal beliefs and superstitions. Many people consider it taboo to live near a graveyard. If prospective home buyers don’t like the idea of living near a cemetery, then it can make the home selling process much more difficult. When potential homeowners become reluctant to purchase a property because of its location, whether it is near a cemetery or not, the home may stay on the market longer. In this case, it may warrant a price decrease by the seller of the home.
