Photovoltaic
Active photoelectric cell made of silicon and activated by electromagnetic energy in the form of light waves. They are now used in a wide range of electronic systems including modulated-light systems such as fiber optics arrays, measuring devices, and in control devices. Photovoltaic cells employ a solid-state diode structure with a large area on a silicon wafer. The surface layer is very thin and transparent so that light can penetrate the silicon.
