Choice an employee can make of receiving higher private pension benefits prior to eligibility for Social Security, and lower pension benefits thereafter. For example, employees taking early retirement may wish to receive higher-than-normal benefits in the months or years before their Social Security benefits begin. In exchange, they would have to accept reduced pension benefits once the Social Security payments started.
